Plaus is located in the lower Vinschgau Valley to the west of Meran on the Etsch river. Due to its proximity to Merano, however, the municipality is not assigned to the Vinschgau district community, but to the Burggrafenamt district community. The small village center is located at an altitude of 519 m on the orographic right side of the wide valley floor of the Adige Valley. Only a narrow strip of land stretches across to the opposite side of the Adige. South of the valley floor, the municipal area rises over the slopes of the Nördersberg to the ridge of the Vigiljoch, the north-easternmost spur of the Zufritt ridge of the Ortler Alps. There, Plaus reaches its highest point at Rauher Bichl at 2018 m.
