Gratsch was a separate municipality until December 1923, when it was incorporated into the municipality of Merano. Today, Gratsch has around 600 inhabitants and belongs to the parish of St. Peter - Gratsch.
The fortifications of Gratsch, which served to protect against flooding and high water, are considered to be the first in Tyrol. Originally, Gratsch was characterized by meadows, later also wine and especially apples were cultivated.
